About KAT BIGGIE Press?
Alexa Bigwarfe, founder and CEO of Kat Biggie Press, didn’t set out to be a publisher. Even though she dreamed of being a writer from the time she started learning how to read, writing and publishing was not the path she followed initially. Her military career led her to be a technical writer as in intelligence officer in the Air Force and later in counterterrorism in Homeland Security. After 10 years in that career field, she decided to stay home with her two young children. And then life got real.
It was a personal tragedy that led to writing and publishing. Her third pregnancy was with identical twin daughters who became very ill in utero with a disease that impacts identical twins???Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS). Both babies were born 10 weeks early and very sick. After two days, Kathryn Bigwarfe, passed away in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Her twin sister would spend 12 weeks in the NICU before coming home. Small, but healthy.
Unsure of how to handle all of the many emotions, Alexa took to blogging. She wanted to blog anonymously, so she took the name ?Kat Biggie? for Kathryn Bigwarfe. Alexa would go on to?publish her first book, a collaborative book for grieving parents,?Sunshine After the Storm: A Survival Guide for the Grieving Mother. When she published, she created her own imprint for the book, Kat Biggie Press. She fell in love with publishing, went on to write and publish?Lose the Cape! Realities for Busy Modern Moms and Strategies to Survive. As she published more books, people began coming to her for help in publishing their own books.
Alexa began shepherding authors through the process and decided she wanted to publish the best of those books under her own imprint, Kat Biggie Press.
As time went on, more and more people came to her looking for advice on children?s books. Knowing that she wanted to learn the process so that?she can publish a book for children grieving the loss of a sibling, she decided to create Purple Butterfly Press. The butterfly is her symbol of remembrance for Kathryn, and purple is her favorite color, the color she chose for the twins, and also, the color of the March of Dimes???the premier organization responsible for advances in neonatal care and treatment.
The name of the company carries a heavy weight and legacy???reminding Alexa every day about her commitment to making the world a better place in memory of her daughter, Kathryn.
